Art therapy

What is art therapy?

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy, incorporating the use of art making into sessions. Art therapy can be done in individual and group sessions. Art therapists work with clients as they create art discussing not only the end results, but also the art making process and materials used along the way. There are many components to making art, and over time an art therapist can help their clients explore such things as emotions, patterns, aspects of self, thought processes, and relaxation techniques while art is being created. All of this contributions to the overall experience of the session, reflecting on both the process and the final image.

Art therapists are masters-level (and beyond) clinicians, and hold the credentials of Registration (ATR) and Board Certification (BC). In New Jersey, a LPAT (Licensed Professional Art Therapist) is the required state license to practice art therapy.
